Mama’s Gun

Erykah Badu

Released November 21st, 2000 on Motown Records, Mama’s Gun is the second studio album by Erykah Badu. The single “Bag Lady”, a top 10 Billboard hit, was Grammy nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song. The song “Didn’t Cha Know?” was also nominated for Best R&B Song. Mama’s Gun was met with great critical success and reached platinum status two months after its release.

Production for the album was conducted at Electric Lady Studios simultaneously with recording for D’Angelo’s Voodoo (2000) and Common’s Like Water for Chocolate (2000). This led to impromptu collaborations and a distinctive sound that is featured on the three albums.
