  • Fulfillingness’ First Finale

Fulfillingness’ First Finale is the landmark album from Stevie Wonder’s “classic period,” released on July 22, 1974.  It was Wonder’s first studio album to top Billboard’s Pop Albums chart where it remained for two weeks, and was his third album to top the R&B chart. Fulfillingness’ First Finale won Grammy Awards for Best Male Pop Vocal, Best Male Rhythm and Blues Vocal Performance (for “Boogie On Reggae Woman”), and Album of the Year in 1975.  It was recorded entirely at Electric Lady Studios.

Notable Mention: Wonder took two years to make the album, which broke his consecutive Grammy streak and led to Paul Simon’s famous quote, “Most of all, I’d like to thank Stevie Wonder for not making an album this year.”

  • Music of My Mind

Music of My Mind is a landmark album by Stevie Wonder, released on March 3rd, 1972 when Wonder was only 21 years old.  The album experiments with song length and traditional boundaries of the R&B genre, making use of the synthesizer and Wonder’s musical ambitions. It also marked the beginning of a long collaboration period with Robert Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil, known as “TONTO’s Expanding Head Band,” designed to bring synthesizers to the forefront of popular music.

Music of My Mind was recorded entirely at Electric Lady Studios, as were its successors, Talking Book (1972) and Fulfillingness’ First Finale (1974).

  • Talking Book

Talking Book is the fifteenth album by Stevie Wonder, released on October 28, 1972.  A signal recording of his “classic period”, Wonder won three awards for the album at the 1974 Grammy Award cermony: Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” and both Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song for “Superstition.” The album was recorded and mixed entirely at Electric Lady Studios.

Notable Mention: Original pressings of the album contain Braille lettering of Wonder’s name and the album title, along with a message not transcribed until the 2000 pressing: “Here is my music. It is all I have to tell you how I feel. Know that your love keeps my love strong. —Stevie”
